Achilles tendon injury? Help please?
Hi, I think that I did something to my achilles tendon, as it’s been hurting significantly for over a week now. If you look at this diagram:

it hurts right where those little lightning bolts are. It hurts when I move my foot in all directions, but especially when I bend my foot upwards (as if I was trying to touch the top of my toes to the front of my shin). It also hurts extremely bad if I press on the area, even lightly. I can’t even walk on it, yet I have no idea what I could have done to it. Does this sound like a strain, or a tear, or something of that sort? I don’t want to go to the doctors and act like a baby about it if it’s just a little sprain, but I’m very tolerant of pain and this is so bad that I wince when I step on it. I’ve waited a week and it keeps feeling worse… should I wait any longer or go to the doctors ASAP? What could it be? Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!
Oops, I forgot to add that occasionally I get a tingly/pins and needles feeling along the bottom of my foot.
I did what you said and nothing at all happened. The foot just stayed in the same exact place, no movement whatsoever. So that means that there IS or is NOT an injury to the achilles?
One more thing (sorry, I keep forgetting!), sometimes when I try to rotate it, maybe 5 times a day, it makes a loud cracking/snapping noise.

hi, i just finished up an anatomy course in med school and can possibly offer some help…
when you bend your foot upwards this has nothing to do with your achilles tendon. the muscles that bend the foor upward are located on the front of the leg or shin area… as your diagram shows the only major muscles attached to the achilles are the gastrocnemius (calf) and soleus (big muscle under the calf). A way to see if you achilles is ruptures, which i can pretty surly say that it isnt is to sit in desk chair with you legs at a 90 degree angle. lift the leg thats bothering you about 4-5 inches from the floor. if you squeeze the calf and soleus with you opposite arm your foot should plantar flex slighty, or bend towards the floor. your foot must be relaxed kind of just hanging there….
possibilites are strains, tears, probably not a sprain in the area you describe. you leg is divided into compartments and this is possibly what is called a compartment syndrome, where pressure in the leg rises and compresses the nerves running through your leg.
i’d say have it checked out if it is a tear it probably wont heal by itself in that area….
hope this helps
