Tendonitis

The most likely symptoms of this condition are associated with a sharp, stabbing pain around the ankle area. This pain is caused by an inflamed or torn posterior tibial tendon. This tendon is attached to the calf muscle and runs along to the foot arch. This tendon has a very important role as it supports the foot and enables the function of walking. Over the years this tendon can take a lot of wear and tear and a damaged tendon can result in a common condition known as flat foot which, is a result of the foot arch collapsing.
Treatment can involve using an air cast boot. This boot is designed to provide support to the tendon by taking pressure of it. The boot acts similar to a plaster cast that supports a broken bone, the only difference is that you can remove the boot. It is advisable that you acquire one of these boots from a qualified foot specialist such as podiatrist. If the condition is very severe surgery may be the only option.

Mortons Neuroma

The symptoms of this foot condition are likely to be a stabbing or burning sensation that comes from the area around the centre or ball of the foot. If you play any sport including softball, you can expect yourself to get injured at one point or another. It’s a part of life of any athlete, especially those playing at an elite level.

One major reason for this is that playing any type of sport subjects your body to a high amount of stress. Your joints are constantly in contact with each other, your muscles and ligaments repeatedly stretch and contract. Injuries that result from these activities are called overuse injuries.

Then there are also those injuries that are called traumatic injuries. These can be caused by severe impact while playing the game. Traumatic injuries in softball can happen when you accidentally collide with another player or when you get hit by a ball.

Here’s a list of some of the most common softball injuries and a short description of what they are:

Tendinitis – this injury commonly affects the shoulders and knees of softball players. With tendinitis, the tendons on these parts of the body become inflamed.

This condition occurs when the joints are overused, or aren’t given enough time to recover after a workout. It can also happen when a player performs the wrong mechanics when running or throwing the ball.

Ankle Sprains – since softball involves a good amount of running, players are also subject to the risk of having ankle sprains. When a player’s ankle is sprained, there could be a minor or complete tear of the ligaments that support the ankle.

Ankle sprains in softball may be caused by poor balance, running on uneven portions of the field, and even accidentally stepping on debris.

ACL Injury – ACL stands for anterior cruciate ligament. It’s the ligament that connects your thigh bone to your tibia located in your shin.

Women are more prone to this kind of condition. Although the chances of an ACL injury are highest in contact sports, it can also happen to players of non-contact sports such as softball.

An ACL injury can happen when a person suddenly twists the knee or suddenly changes direction. It could result in a loud pop which is the actual sound of the ligament tearing. The knee would, then, get swollen soon after.

Preventing These Injuries

What I shared with you are just 3 of the most common softball-related injuries. But while they are common, there are things that you can do to protect yourself from these.

For one, and I can’t emphasize this enough, always warm up before and cool down after playing. Warming up your body primes you for the intense activity that you’re about to do on the field like running, swinging the bat or throwing the ball. Cooling down, meanwhile, returns your body to its pre-game condition so it can begin its recovery.

Aside from doing warm ups and cool downs, you must also give your body enough time to recover. Your body can only take too much stress in a day. That’s why you should also give it at least a day to recover. During the recovery period, just rest and don’t train or play the game.

Now that you know the most common injuries in softball, see to it that you do the precautions I shared with you so, that you would stay injury-free during the entire softball season.

Some Common Reasons Of Back And Neck Crack

Stretching and cracking our neck and back feels really good when we feel tired after working hard or staying in one position for a long time. When the joints of back and neck crack, it doesn’t mean one is growing old but it may be taken as a sign of losing posture. Sometimes, we accidentally crack our back and neck when we do stretching and exercises. Cracking back or neck will not normally cause pain in both situations.

Cracking simply relieves pressure from joints that is created by tense muscles and tight joints. With a good massage on our neck and back, the stretching relieves this ball of pressure of the muscle tension and joint stiffness.

A number of theories explain why backs and joints crack. Experts don’t agree most of the times on these theories although they all point out that it must be caused by gas bubbles that are released in the cartilage when the joints move. There are big and small bubbles and when the joints are stretched; the small bubbles suck the big bubbles. This process repeats for nearly twenty minutes. The same mechanism works while cracking wrists, knuckles, or ankles.

The skeletal spine in the neck or the cervical spine has spurs or little wings that stick out. When there is a neck problem sometimes, the two discs on each side of the problem area get rubbed creating a popping or snapping noise. Cavities of synovial fluid collapsing and releasing gas produce cracking sound. Adhesions between joints are broken and there is a rapid stretching of ligaments. A low pressure environment has gases that are dissolved in the synovial fluid leaving a solution creating a cavity or bubble that rapidly collapses resulting in a clicking sound.

Other scientific reasons why joints crack are because of rubbing of rough edges and shifting of joints and ligaments. When a person ages, the tendons lose and slightly gets out of place. This results in a cracking sound because the tendon is hardly pressed to return to its original location. The ligaments tighten around the joints when a body moves and it happens around the knee and ankle mostly. If one makes a habit of forcibly cracking the neck and back frequently, especially for relieving pressure and pain, this can lead to loss of elasticity in the ligaments.

The reliable way of treating the causes of tension and stiffness in the neck area is to see a physical therapist. They suggest exercises that can relieve tension and stiffness without causing harm to the neck area.

Easy home remedies to relieve crack and pain is by moving one’s spine while stretching the lower back, abs, calf and upper back. It can be tried for a few minutes after having a morning walk. Sleeping in a proper way and one may simply keep a good posture by choosing where and how to walk, sit and sleep will also have a good impact on the body.

It is often difficult to differentiate between a sprained ankle and a stress fracture, and an x-ray is typically necessary.

Plantar Fasciitis

Another common and painful foot condition is plantar fasciitis- an inflammation and irritation of the band of tissue that extends from the heel along the arch of the foot. Of all athletes, runners experience plantar fasciitis the most, causing pain in the heel and arch, making running long distances extremely difficult.

Rest, ice and inflammatory medications are often the best treatments for plantar fasciitis. You can also talk to your podiatrist about specific exercises, stretches and shoe inserts that can alleviate the heel pain and help heal the inflamed tissue.

Athlete’s Foot

It’s very common for athletes to develop fungus on their feet. Athlete’s foot is the most common of these infections, and is most often contracted in warm, moist public areas, such as locker rooms, showers and pools. This foot fungus usually appears as cracked and peeling skin on the bottom of the foot or between the toes. It typically itches, and when severe, blisters can form.

Prevent athlete’s foot by always wearing shoes in public areas, and keep feet dry before putting on socks. Most of the time over-the-counter anti-fungal foot powder is enough to eliminate the infection. But in severe cases, a prescription strength medication from your podiatrist will be necessary for getting rid of this commonly recurring condition.

Foot injuries do happen- especially to individuals that actively participate in sports and physical activities.
