Help for a beginning runner with flat feet and tight tendons. Grrr…?

… I’ve always been a terrible runner, but enjoy the feeling (well, all 3 or 4 minutes of it I can manage at a time). I also enjoy the health benefits. I think my eventual goal will be trail running, since I like hiking and the outdoors so much, but I doubt I’ll ever run more than a half marathon (and that’s a very long-term goal, indeed).

As of now, I’m training for my first 5k. I’m in decent shape, due to lots of time on the elliptical, but this doesn’t translate into pounding the pavement. My big problem is really flat feet (which results in sore feet, sore knees, pain in the hips, and pain in the lower back as I continue to run) and tight tendons in my feet (particularly my achilles heel).

Re: the flat feet, I know that shoes and orthotics are the probable answer. I have some custom-molded shoe inserts I wear that seem to help a little. I definitely need some new shoes, but that’ll have to wait until I have more money and have “earned” them (e.g., actually kept up a useful running schedule).

Re: the tendons… I’m at a loss. Any suggestions for pre-run stretching? How long? What type? Can I strengthen them somehow? I want to be able to run, pain-free (or well, as much as ANYONE can ever run pain-free), so I can increase my mileage and get off of the elliptical machine and out into the world at large.

Thanks for all your running advice!

What is wrong with my feet?

Im a 15 year old diabetic, and for as long as I can remember I have had issues with my feet. This had varied from Achilles tendons to ingrown toenails, and now I am suffering more so than ever. Just for the record, I have always tried my hardest to keep my feet well looked after, ive used pumice rocks, creams, moisturisers, insoles dried them when they got wet etc, but im really beginning to give up on them. There just another complication amongst other things in my life and there really getting me down.

My most recent problems are with the side of my big toes and the balls ( on both feet). I also have burning pains down the side of my feet and into my heels. On my toes, the skin is very thin and falls/peels off itself in layers which often results in discomfort and bleeding.

I do play alot of sport, mainly tennis. But I have always worn suitable footwear, for example K-Swiss, and my school shoes are cushioned and made properly as apose to those plimsolls things that everyone else wears.I have spoken to my diabetic nurse about this, and she has written to the board of ‘feet care’ ( cant remember the official name). But she has said that im looking at 18months before i even get a consultation. I think by that time if I do not get any help im going to chop them both off!!!

All im asking for is if anyone knows what’s going on, and also where / how i can get them sorted one and for all!!! I have been sent for xrays a few years ago, and all that they showed was that the joints in my toes, were not where they should be, and in some cases, they are missing completely! I have since been discharged from the practise and now have to start the case from scratch.

Please help :(

Recently, my feet, heel and achilles have been hurting me when I run?

I am a relatively light runner, usually my feet are the last thing on my mind. I have pretty springy steps. I strike midfoot. anyways, my achilles tendon hurt for a few miles lately, and I was worried it might snap. I have to run 8 miles today for xc, nothing can be done about that, and i have no pains right now…

Im 16, and going to be turning 17 this summer. When I do turn 17 i wish to join the army active duty (Mos will be Military Police 31B i beleive), but anyhow only problem is I have flat feet. My feet have fallen arches but aren’t rigid, and dont produce any pain. My knees, shins, ankles, and achilles tendon are completely fine. I also play football as a running back and a outside linebacker, so this proves i can run and function properly…

I have a sharp shooting intense pain on the inside of my foot toward the back near the achilles tendon. It’s very intense and is very tender to touch. Can this be the beginning of shingles. There are no lesions yet.

Feet hurt so badly that it’s difficult to walk?

In the last year, it’s become incredibly hard to walk most of the time. I try to hide it, but it’s getting progressively worse. It started with tingling in my toes, and a couple of black colored toneails. My calf then started to ache and hurt when I went up stairs. I’m only 21, and I now have constant severe pain in the heels on my feet, my shins are sore to the touch, and my ankles have a constant sharp pain whenever I’m walking. I’m a full time college student working a full time job, with two kids and I’m trying to support our family. (Please don’t put down my husband, I wanted to work.) So I’m just trying to find the time to get hospital tests done. My family doctor had an US of my veins and arteries to check for DVT, but those tests came back fine. I’m supposed to go soon and get some more tests ran-for Lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis. I’m not seeing a specialist though.
I have swelling of my ankles, and even when sitting, the pain radiates from the arch of my foot, to my achilles tendon, ankle, up my calf, and into my shins. My knees also hurt sometimes.. I always feel kind of stiff, like I really need to pop my back but I can’t. It’s symmetrical pain. Please, any advice at all would be great, and thanks in advance.
Thank you pickin5strings, the support means a lot. :)
Are there any doctors or nurses out there who could help me??
Thank you. It’s possible that it’s spondylosis, the symptoms are very similar.

if i can’t stand on my feet for more than an hour, is that considered disabled?

I had foot surgery 2 years ago august 08, a Tendon Flexor Transfer and Achilles lengthening. I have mad mad pain down the top of my foot to before my my big toe and i can’t stand on my feet more than a hour it sucks because working requires that duh. i’m 20 and can’t get a sit job so what would be the opinion of my fellow American’s guidelines of being disabled?

Pain in My Feet/ Ankles ???

I have a pain in my ankles near my achilles tendon(but I don’t think it’s tendonidous). I first started getting this pain after running sprints in track. Then I started feeling the same pain after playing DDR. Today I was walking home in flip flops( I only walked about 1/4 mile) and my feet hurt so bad I barely made it in the door! I’m not overweight and in pretty good shape. I’m only 15, and am not flat footed. Why do I keep getting these pains in my feet? What can I do to make them stop?
