Knee injury, seems related to patellar tendon rupture (if only partial)?
I’m a 41 year old, 210 pound 5′.9″ male, who falls into the “weekend warrior” category (group sports every now and then). I love Ultimate Frisbee and I’ve played with resulting mild injuries from time to time, for over exertion or just the result of not being constant enough with routine exercise, not taking of the extra weight, or in most cases stupidly forgetting that at my age warming up and stretching are the most important parts of the whole workout (never did it in my 20’s or 30’s, so I’m also paying for it now).
I’ve had mostly tendinitis issues, related to knee joints, ankles and heels. Sometimes some other part of my body aches, maybe from a fall, maybe from a sudden hard movement, but in most cases, it’s my feet (I know, the weight).
The past couple of months I’ve been relocated far from home and because of that my “two times a week” of two hour hard running games was halted. But I was really happy when I made contact with a local Ultimate Frisbee league and so I started into a one day a week routine. I honestly played less intense, aware of my being in less shape than before, specially because the hours the games started didn’t allow for much (if any) warm up.
Anyway, last Friday night I warmed up for about five minutes and then ran into the field as a point was scored against my team. On my first strong run a disk was thrown at me, but away from my diagonal direction (I was running left and the disk flew to my right and back). I tried to change directions but I felt a popping crunching sensation on my knee and all of the sudden I was on the grass. I felt like my left knee had given out slightly forwards and to the left. I’m not really sure, because it was so quick.
I felt pain, strong pain. And all that was going through my mind was “NO! not my KNEE!!”
I’ve heard so many terrible accounts of knee injuries and unsuccessful surgeries (a friend of mine even had to have his knee “welded” and he walks with a permanently straight leg now) that it was the worst thing in my mind that could have happened to me. In my pain I asked a team mate to pull on my leg a bit because I couldn’t stretch it. Finally I did and I got up, not wanting to hold up the game and hoping stupidly it was nothing. I stretched it out, jumped a few times, shook it and the pain was gone and I could walk and run… sooooo, I started to play some more (yeah, I know…) and on my first run, pop!-ground!
That’s when I finally realized something definitely wasn’t right.
I walked out of the field limping and the wife of a team mate, who had actually been telling me her own foul tale regarding her knee injury and following failed surgery a week before told me to try to crouch and get up again. I could. Actually all I felt on my knee was tightness. No burning. No pain. I hoped for the best.
I sat out a bit of the game, and decided it was time to go home.
Our company housing fridge had died the day before and we where waiting on a new one Saturday afternoon, so there was no ice to be had.
So I simply showered and went to bed. I guess I wasn’t doing anything about it because I wanted it to be nothing, fear can make you be stupid that way.
The next day of course, my knee had swollen up. Well, actually not my knee, but the point where the quadriceps meets the knee. I realized then I had to have someone look at it.
As I said, I’m temporarily relocated for work reasons, out of my country. So insurance is a bit complicated. I made all the necessary calls and went to a walk in clinic.
I had x-rays done, the doctor examined me, for resistance and strength. He tried extracting fluid from my knee but there was basically none to extract. He didn’t have an answer for me, all he said was: Rest it, wrap it. Time for ice is over. Take Motrin, and these pain killers (as I said I don’t have any pain, except if I do a wrong twist). He told me that if it gets worse, to go back or see a speciallist and maybe get an MRI, because if it’s tissue, it won’t show on the x-rays.
So, I read up a bit on google.
And I found info on patellar tendon injuries. I believe it’s not a rupture, at least not a serious one. It reminds me more of the times I’ve twisted my ankles (when I used to play basketball in my 20’s). This could be the final result of being stupid about my knees. I over did at some point, when I was about 23, using that machine where you sit and lift the lower part of your legs against weight, showing off. Then I played for years basketball, never warming up or stretching. And so, in my late 30’s I’ve had very weak knees, having a hard time with stairs mostly. Also one of those mild injuries I’ve mentioned is a recurring plantar fasciitis, which had me limping for two weeks, putting additional preasure for over compensating precisely on the leg where I ended up hurting my knee.
I believe it’s related to the patellar tendon because of where I have the swelling, and because of the other things I’ve mentioned. But I also believe it’s not a seriou
Knee injury and quad muscle.?
A little background info…I injured my knee in Oct. Had an MRI diagnosis was a sublaxation of the patellar tendon, patellar tendonitis and MCL sprain. I have gone through 4 months of physical therapy and I am currenlty recieving injections of sodium hyaluran.
Here is my newest issue. If I am sitting in a chair and I extend my leg out and then bend it back down my entire thigh shakes. It’s not a gentle shake its kind of a rough shake. I showed my dr and said he had never seen a leg move like that and he felt around while I did it over and over again. He suggested that I work on strenthing my quad muscle to see if that woudl help. I’m pretty sure he couldn’t really figure out why it was happening. I work out on a regular basis and have been doing the at home exercises that the therapist gave me. So im not sure that the quad muscle is the issue but I am willing to try to fix it. I have two more shots so he gave me two weeks to try to fix it or it was back to physical therapy I go.
I use the weight machines at the gym, do leg lifts at all angles with ankle weights, wall sits, small squats (I go as far as I can without great pain), the occasional lunges (once again there is a pain factor there) and I use the eliptical, tredmil, and bike.
Are there any other exercises I should try to work on my quads? If you are a therapist or a doctor have you ever seen anyones leg shake like I described above and what was your diagnosis?
Thanks!
have you ever had some sort of injury to play basketball with?
i have tryouts tomorrow for my high school basketball team. im a freshamn, 24 kids make it and around 35 are trying out. ive done just about everthing with this high school from 7th grade clinics to pre season workouts after school which started a week after school started and ive only missed two. so my injury is tendonitis. i have VERY flat feet and ive never done a lot of running like i have before. so recently today i got insoles for my flat feet and i need to get new basketball shoes.
my tendonitis hurts me so ive been elevating my ankle and icing it the past couple days. i have tryouts for three days mon, tues, and wednes, this week (tomorrow). so if you have ever had to go through tryouts with an injury, what helped you overcome it to make your team?
ankle injury please help?
i think i might have injured my ankle. it isnt swollen or bruised but hurts. it started about 2 weeks ago when my achilles tendon was feeling tight then there would be periods of time where it was very painful to walk. the pain wasnt constant so i ignored it thinking it was normal. then when i would walk my ankle started to hurt on the sides. and now my ankle hurts constantly on the sides and it feels tight when i walk. i am starting to get concerned and wondering if i should go to the dr.
the pain is not unbarable and i can walk but a few yrs ago i had a pretty bad ankle sprain (same ankle) and was sent to physical therapy. i rolled my ankle and went to the dr with minimal pain and my dr saw nothing wrong 2 months later i was seeing a different dr with extreme pain, swelling, and weakness. that is why i am concerned. i dont think i necessarily need a dr. but i dont want to have a reaccurance of my last injury. what should i do??? please help
i have been icing and resting it daily. i have been keeping it elevated and off my feet as much as possible. so i have been taking the steps to make it better.
Excessive ankle popping long after injury healed?
Last year I felt a sharp pain in my ankle when I was walking. There was no noise or feeling of tearing or snapping, so I thought it was just a sprain. After reading a bit on ankle injuries, it kind of sounds like it could have been a partial achilles tendon rupture, but it might have just been a sprain. About two weeks after this happened my ankle started popping alot with movement. Its been about 9 months now, and even right now when I move my ankle around or walk there’s a few fairly loud pops with each movement. No pain associated with it. The ankle feels stable, although I haven’t tried working out since this happened. Any ideas what this could be from? I read that surgery is the best way to repair ruptured tendons ( assuming that’s what I had happen ) but that you have to get it done right away, and self healed tendons are usually susceptible to recurring ruptures. Is there any point in going to get this looked at even though it’s been 9 months since it happened?
How to tell when my dog has a severe leg injury?
Recently, my dog has developed a limp on her back right leg. She is a Siberian Husky about 2 years old, she only weighs about 45-50lbs. One day she just started holding her leg up without putting pressure on it, then the next day she was putting some wieght on it (more than “toe touching”). She still runs on it – maybe a little more cautiously/slowly, however she is still pretty active.
I have gently felt her leg, hip, achilles, knee, toes, etc – she shows not sign of stress/pain when you touch it. She has been a very cautious dog when it comes to people touching her back legs, hips, etc – however, she will allow me to do this without struggling.
Could this be an acl tear, acl pull, achilles tendon injury? We planned to take her to the vet last week – but she seemed to get better until yesterday. She began limping on it again, at some points “toe touching” and others no weight at all. We are going to take her to the vet, but were hoping to hear that this was not going to cost us a fortune!
Anything advice will help!
Thanks!
Bone pro’s, how do you treat severe foot/heel injury?
My nephew who is 7 years old had a motorbike accident. His foot was severely damaged, sole tissues were scraped, the achilles tendon was cut short and calcaneus bone was severely damaged that the first doctor mistakenly removed it. Now he has difficulty walking, he felt intense pain whenever he use his right foot, he walks on tiptoe so he is depending on crutches. Wounds are healed too. What can be the best treatment for this child? If ever, will he be able to walk, run normally as he used to do? Please advice.
do i have a bad injury?
im 17 years old and ive been running for three years now. Last xc season i started to feel pain in the back of one of my legs. I would still run through the pain and then my foot would numb up and i would start draggin my foot. I already took about a month off and i started running again but it doesn’t go away. Although it is very painful it only hurts sometimes but when it does hurt it hurts alot. The pain goes from my calf to my achilles tendon. Is this normal?…what should i do?…ive talked to my coach and she just tells me to take it easy but i feel like this isn’t letting me run to my full potential
What type of injury is this?
I am a swimmer and I have been running lately. I’ve gradually been getting this pain that starts just above my achilles tendon and goes up the side of my leg to a few inches from my knee. I’ve been a bit worried about it, because it has been keeping me from getting my exercise. I would really appreciate it.
I also have been getting another injury constantly when I swim/kick. It is right next to my ankle bone and feels like a sharp stabbing pain.
I would really appreciate and answer for both of these or even just one!
Thanks!
-Molly
I normally have very flexible ankles, but whenever I try to point my toes (ex. stand tip toed), it starts to feel very painful.
The Vertical Jump Bible and my injury?
I did something to my achilles tendon about a week ago. I play Basketball for an AAU team and i wanted to increase my hops. I was doing some plyometric exercises before all this, and i was sitting one day and got up and i got a sharp pain in my achilles tendon. I’m 15.
The cause of this was because of repeated movement on my legs because of plyos. The doctor told me to stay off of it for awhile. But when i get better could I start the Vertical Jump Bible. Im not sure if i was doing the plyometric workouts right before. But now i got the VJB and it shows you how to do these exercises. So it would be safe to start the VJB after i get better right?
