For the past 3 yrs I have been continuously getting pain in my left foot around my heel and the achilles area. It would constantly swell up and go away after about a week of not doing anything. Eventually the pain got worse and I went to a doctor. Intially after the first MRI he believed it was Achilles Tendonitis and got me into PT. It continued to happen again over and over and than they gave me awalking boot. When the pain and swelling would occur I would wear the boot for about a week and the pain would go away. Than on my second MRI the podiatrist notcied something else. He said that I had an overgrown talus bone which kept jamming between my other bones when i did physical activity. So then came surgery….he said he had never seen anyone with so much extra bone in their talus…..he originally thought there was one fracture but there was 4. I had surgery..no pins nothing like that..jus removed the “extra” bone(s). Its been 3 weeks im feeling better…but the swelling wont stop.

Here’s a quick history of my ankle:

I’ve had problems with my left ankle for about 5 or 6 years now,including many sprains,supposed holes in my bone,and achilles tendinitis.In the past year and a half though,I’ve had even more issues.I’ve probably sprained it at least 10 times,3 of them being pretty bad (one in October 2005,one in November 2006,and one March 21 of this year).The last sprain (March of this year) came from slipping while doing a kickline during rehearsal for Beauty and the Beast only a week before the show,so I took a couple days off,and then I danced in all 4 performances of the show with it taped (and this was OKed by the doctor,although in retrospect,it was a terrible idea).I was on crutches until about a week ago,and in a boot for most of that time.It was my sports doctor who recommended that I see the surgeon,and he really likes this surgeon because she is very conservative,and she really knows what she’s doing.
On Tuesday I had an appointment with the OS about my ankle…And here’s what happened.

She tested both my ankles for instability,and found that my left (the one I went in for) is in fact quite unstable.She then went on to say that I have 2 choices of what I can do:

1. Do lots of physical therapy,change my lifestyle (stop dancing and running track),and live with an unstable ankle.
2. Have surgery (Brostom procedure sometime in June after school gets out…3 weeks on crutches,3 in a boot,and extensive PT).

I’m getting an MRI on Saturday so we can find out the extent of the damage to my ligaments,and then I’ll see the OS again on the 23rd.

I’m also out of the boot now!I’m in a Rocket Sock which is much better (according to both the OS and myself) because it’s more supportive,and is low profiled so I can wear two shoes again!

So,onto the questions:

1. What do you think I should do?
2. Have any of you had the Brostrom procedure?What was it like?
3. What was the recovery period like?
4. Has anyone worn a Rocketsoc before?How do you make it so that you don’t have to adjust it so much throughout the day?
5. If I had the surgery done at the beginning of July,do you think I would be able to go camping the second week of August?

My foot was ice cold and my doctor originally diagnosed me with tendinitis of the foot and ankle. He took a second look at my foot and thought there was a blockage, he proved right with an ultrasound of the vascular system. So I need to know some non-expensive treatment options if anyone knows any.

So for the past four years i’ve dealt with severe ankle problems, mostly around my outer ankle and my inside arch on my right foot/ankle. Four years ago i sprained it and the doctors just told me to rest and i’d be good to play softball in a couple of weeks.They scheduled no xrays or mri’s… so i did as i was told and stayed off of it. As soon as i started playing i started having pains and as the years went on it got worse and worse. i went back to the doctors 2 years later and the sent me to physical therapy for a year or so after the that they decided to get some xrays and mri’s. Turns out that there is a big bruise on my ankle bone, they also told me that i had chronic tendinitis. So they put me in a cast for a month. I’ve had my cast off for 6 weeks now and i’m back in physical therapy but it still hurts to walk on it. Is there any kind of surgery i could get to take care of this…or any other solution that will solve this problem?

I went into my ortho Dr.’s office with complaints in my left ankle when I first wake up & going up hills with swelling involved near my old ankle stabilization scar from 2001. The MRI showed “a spur projecting off the anterior article surface of the tibia, with some associated marrow edema. Findings consistent with anterior impingement, no evidence of associated edema involving the talus, or associated joint body”. “Ligaments: Marked thickening & irregular of the anterior talofibular ligament, the talar as well as the fibular attachments now remain intact, small joint effusion present.” Extensor & flexor long tendons all appear intact, no evidence of tendonitis, tenosynovitis or a tendon tear”.
So, this doesn’t seem that bad to the untrained eye, why does my Dr. want to drill a hole in my bone & loop my tendon through it? I have a second opinion scheduled for tomorrow, but I would like to be knowledgeable when talking to the new Dr., we are talking about crutches for 2 months.

America help! One doc, bandaged my foot with pills and send me on my way. Another gave me a walking boot, with orthotics, and also send me on my way. Both don’t seem to help as far as nature fixing the problem, other night my foot was swollen and in more pain. I need someone in LI that is an expert in this area. Tired of paying $40 co-pay for office visits with no plan of action!

Revision ACL Surgery

After you have an ACL reconstruction you lead a normal injury free return to all activities. It is an unfortunate fact that sometimes even after you have your ACL reconstructed, that you can do something to re-injure the ligament and require another reconstructive surgery.

Many times if you re-injure your ACL, another reconstruction is needed. If this is the case, well over 50% of the time the reconstruction requires two surgeries. The first surgery requires doctor to remove the old screws from the tunnels (figure 1), repair any damage that occurred to the other structures of the knee and to use donor bone plugs (figure 3) to graft into the tunnels (figure 2). After a sufficient period of time to allow for proper healing of the bone grafting, Doctor will then perform the second phase of the reconstruction. This surgery consists of drilling new tunnels and then reconstructing the ACL again….

Revision anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is indicated for selected patients with recurrent instability after a failed primary procedure. The cause of the failure must be carefully identified to avoid pitfalls that may cause the revision to fail as well. Associated instability patterns must be recognized and corrected to achieve a successful result. The choice of graft, the problem of retained hardware, and tunnel placement are the major challenges of revision ACL reconstruction.

The patient must have reasonable expectations and understand that the primary goal of surgery is restoration of the ability to perform activities of daily living, rather than a return to competitive athletics. The results of revision ACL reconstructions are not as good as those after primary reconstructions; however, the procedure appears to be beneficial for most patients. I am in a lot of pain. Right I am doing stretching excerises and ice packs. Anyone else ever have this problem and what do you do to correct it?
